*Wrote this blog on the airplane last week (1/3/11) and have just now been able to find time to post.
As I type this (enroute to Vegas) A mother with 2 kids & an infant sit behind. me & "Sally Stew" (my co-worker & close friend who insists on being referred to as such- don't ask.)
Prime example of a parent who failed to prep her kids for a 4 hour flight. It's not so much their whining & crying that is miserable (thank you Delta for your 757's inflight entertainment system!) Poor Sally Stew is sitting in front of the kids who insist on kicking the seat just as she's falling asleep.
That was all expected. But just when we've thought we've seen it all……some schmuck surprises us all.
Mother begins yelling at her kids to be quiet & pick up their games (what? you did bring things for your kids to do? wouldn't have known) or they'll get their @$$ smacked when they get to Vegas. Then she (not so gently) put the infant in the seat next to her (nearly upside down) with one of the toddlers to put her finger in the other kid's face and use some pretty obscene language. At this point Sally had gone to the back to buy another "Skyy Fresca" (btw yummy) and when the cursing began I had to remove myself too. I couldn't just put my headphones back in and ignore that.
I came back to my seat and minutes later the mother leaves the infant with the 6ish year old daughter & toddler and goes to the back of the airplane. The baby is screaming and the toddler is climbing on the seats….The 6 year old is trying her best to calm the little baby boy….to no avail. All of the adults are looking at each other like "what do we do?" When she finally came back 10 minutes later (it was probably 5 but it felt 20) she had a bottle filled with apple juice.
Really lady? I get you needed a mental break but Sally & I almost suffered mild heart attacks. Your Passenger Service Unit above your seat is equipped with a "Call Button" Or take the baby with you….
So many times while working mothers have been in that situation & have asked me to sit with their other child while using the bathroom/breathing…….or holding the baby while they take the other one to the bathroom. These Delta Flight Attendants are seasoned vets…..I'm sure they would've done the same.
So readers- does it shock you & make you feel uncomfortable when parents leave their youngsters (especially babies) alone in their seats?
p.s.- I began my day a 5am EST in PIT…..took a 7:45am to PHL arrived an hour later & took my time making my way over to the PHL-LAS flight for USAirways Downsized aircraft ($#!^) One seat open…..well Sally had the hotel reservations and she didn't wanna leave me behind….Run over to Frontier to try going to Milwaukee to hop either the Frontier, Southwest or Airtran flight to Vegas. One seat open….crap….Okay I was fine with splitting up. But we decided we'd put our heads together & figure out something else. We took a look at the flight boards and headed yet again to the other side of the airport to hop on Delta (Sally on the phone with her contacts at Commair checking flight loads)…..Detroit it was. Thank you to the fab Delta Flight Attendant who was rocking the Red Dress for our goodie bag :) Love you! We enjoyed Detroit for 3 hours….and here we are enroute. OH the joys of Non-Revving…Thank you Delta Airlines for being so awesome…..Inflight Entertainment system rocks!
PSS Sally likes :-D don't edit that out- it's important. (okay Sally….you crazy chic)
