I have waited too long to post. Especially about this topic. I will respond to another Flight Attendant Blog (Up Up & A Gay) and elaborate on how amazing of an idea Spirit Airlines is onto with their Carry On Bag Fees.
Bobby writes that airlines have the whole baggage fee thing backwards. I am in total agreement. Why are our airlines charging for bags that they aren't able to garuntee will be at the passengers' final destinations?? Solution: Offer 1 checked bag free, and charge for the 2nd bag. Being able to bring your suitcase onto the aircraft is the only sure fire way to ensure it will make it to your destination with you- so it really is quite convenient isn't it? Obviously whatever is in your Carry-on will have to meet TSA specifications and will have to be able to fit in the bin.
So how would this Carry-On Convenience Fee program work if I ran an airline? I'll walk you through it. You are traveling for a weekend, to "meet the parents" for the first time. Your biggest fear is getting to his home town and your bag not showing up in baggage claim, and having to share clothes with a family member that you just met! Or worse...you miss your connection...its a snowstorm...and you have to sleep in the airport! No biggie. When you purchase your ticket you will be given the option to purchase a "Bin Tag" for one or both of your carry-on items for $20 each. When you check in online or at the ticket counter/kiosk you will also have this option, but the "Bin Tag" will cost you $25. If you are a last minute kinda person- you still have a chance, but it'll cost you double! The airline has already figured out how many bags can be accomodated in the bins for the aircraft you are flying on, and once the spaces have been sold, you are left with checking it for free.
Not sure if your bag will fit under the seat? Can someone invent a box that you put your bag into that through the magic of technology is able to measure it and compute based on measurements of the particular aircraft if the bag will fit? (idea (c) Flying Bachelorette 2010)
Anyways....so you purchased the "Bin Tag", so when you check in at the airport, the agent will give you a "Bin Tag" to place on your Carry-On. Be sure to leave TSA prohibited items out please! When it's time to board, you will be able to board first (another perk!) If you don't board with the "Bin Tag" passengers, you may not have a bin space near your seat.
You arrive at your destination with all your pretty clothes, accessories, and underthings....the peace of mind is well worth the $20 isn't it?
See its that easy....."Bin Space" can be sold just like extra leg room, choice seating, snacks, alcohol, and fresh, germ free pillows & blankets.
I just recently did the "Meet the Parents" thing....LOVE them. LOVE the family. LOVE their town....sooo I may just have to relocate to the Puegot Sound.
I'm finally getting around to catching up on other FA blogs! So happy to see other FAs agree with me! :D
